PLEASE TAKE CARE – VERY STRONG AND POWERFUL PRODUCT
A traditional Methylene Chloride (dichloromethane) paint stripper restricted for use only by suitably trained and equipped professional operators within a fully ventilated and accessible working environment. The product is very fast acting and will rapidly break down and blister multiple layers of paint in a single application.
It is uniquely effective in removing specialised industrial paints such as two-pack epoxy coatings, cellulose lacquers, traffic paints and powder coatings which are not as easy to remove using less volatile water-based paint stripping products.
Operators using this paint stripper must have received full training and be competent in the use of control systems both engineered and for personal protection from exposure to vapour levels above the workplace exposure limit for Methylene Chloride/dichloromethane.
Restricted to industrial use and to professionals approved in certain EU Member States – verify where use is allowed.
DESCRIPTION STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER is a traditional Methylene Chloride based paint stripper,
effective in blistering and removing virtually all types of surface coating, including automotive
primers, top-coats including two-pack epoxy or PU based coatings. The product is a smooth, free
flowing viscous liquid, demonstrating excellent cling to vertical surfaces and incorporating strong
polar solvents to rapidly break down, soften and blister multiple layers of old and established paint
finish in a single application. This product is uniquely effective in removing specialised industrial
paints such as two-pack epoxy coatings, cellulose lacquers, traffic paints, decorative enamels and
powder coatings which are not readily removed using less volatile water-based paint stripping
products. It is proven to reveal the original bare metal finish without causing any surface abrasion or
corrosive pitting. STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER is only approved for use by suitably trained and
equipped professional operators within a suitably contained and equipped working environment,
such as a locally exhaust ventilated paint booth, where operators can be equipped with the
appropriate respiratory protection to ensure they are not exposed to DCM vapours which are above
the workplace exposure limit. PREPARATION Check that the base structure is resistant to polar
solvents (i.e. Methylene Chloride), as certain types of plastic, fibreglass, rubber seals and other
synthetic composites may be adversely affected in contact with STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER, though
all metal based substrates will remain unaffected.
Use masking tape and polythene sheeting to protect any surrounding surfaces not intended for paint
removal. Prior to application and as a means of determining efficacy, all paint removers benefit from
the use of a test patch to determine the effectiveness of the stripper against the number and type of
layers of paint present, thus indicating how many repeat applications may be required to remove all
of them back to the base substrate. The test patch will also help determine whether there will be
any detrimental effect to the substrate, particularly where plastics or composite materials are
beneath the paint, as they may be damaged if in direct contact with STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER. If
possible testing should be carried out on a small area or a separate component coated with an
identical finish, over a patch not more than about 6” x 6”. Leave the test patch for about 30 minutes
to 1 hour, then remove the blistered residues with a scraper and assess its effectiveness Providing
the test patch has demonstrated a successful outcome, application of STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER
to the entire area can proceed.
Isolate the application zone from unprotected persons and activate all available ventilation systems
to ensure vapours are exhausted via ducting to a safe and open area where accidental contact or
exposure is not possible. Post notices at access and egress points around the stripping zone to alert
passers-by of the danger from contact with any HARMFUL residues and odours likely to be present
whilst work proceeds. Only decant a sufficient volume of STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER into a steel
open top container that is sufficient for the immediate area to be treated and return any unused
stripper to the screw top can and re-fit the closure.
DO NOT use a plastic vessel to hold decanted stripper as this may be rapidly degraded. Apply to the
surface using a brush, ensuring a consistent layer (1 to 2mm thick) is achieved and that it penetrates
into all crevices and corners. Do not cover an area of greater than 0.5 square metres at any one time
to minimise vapour exposure and when the coating begins to blister after about 10 minutes stripping
can proceed by using a sharp spatula or straight edge tool to gently lift the blistered paint away from
the surface to reveal the bare substrate. If primer layers are still evident, re-apply more paint
remover over this layer and repeat the process. The use of a sharp point to strip corners, grooves
and recesses along with a prompt re-application of STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER may help achieve a
more consistent & complete final finish. Collect all paste residues in to newspaper or dust sheets and
place in a marked open container outdoors away from contact with unprotected persons.
The rapid evaporative properties of STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER will further reduce the presence
any residual harmful solvents prior to the container being sealed for eventual disposal.
The stripped surface should be thoroughly washed down with soapy water or alternatively the use
of white spirit may be more appropriate to avoid any risk of corrosive staining to the exposed metal
bodywork. COVERAGE The consumption of paint remover depends on the depth applied and texture
of the surface. On a flat even surface at 1mm depth, 5 litres of STEYER HD PAINT REMOVER will be
sufficient to cover at least 5 square metres. Always assess the test patch before estimating how
much product will be required, repeat application to the primer & undercoat layers of paint beneath
the “top-coat” may be necessary.
